Pavement Identity: Columbus retains in its German Village and Short North neighborhoods one of the greatest quantities of historic street pavement among U.S. cities.  Although all of the surviving historic street pavement is vitrified brick, the city has a remarkable variety of types of bricks, including evidently uniquely overscaled "waffle" pattern bricks.  Sandstone curbs are another defining characteristic of Columbus.
